There are a several methods of tree pruning that we may employ depending on your needs:
- Crown Thinning
- Crown Raising
- Crown Reduction
Crown Thinning
This technique is used often for hardwood trees. The purpose of this type of tree pruning is to maintain the visual form and structure of your plant. When we employ this type of technique we will selectively choose certain branches throughout the tree for removal. When we strategically cut away some of the branches, this will allow more air to move in and around the structure, which leads to a healthier environment for new growth. By thinning some of the tree, it also gets more exposure to sunlight which makes it healthier as well. While we may remove significant dead growth from the tree, we will not take away more than 25% of the plant’s live growth.
Crown Raising
This type of tree pruning is generally reserved for solving safety problems. Branches from the bottom of the tree will be pruned using this technique. Perhaps one of your trees has branches that are hanging over the street, which can cause clearance issues for vehicles and can also be a safety hazard for pedestrians. Another reason to raise the crown is if you have branches hanging too low and touching your roof. This can cause roof leaks and other issues over time, and so it should be addressed as soon possible. When we do a crown raising type of pruning, we will usually leave at least two-thirds of the upper portion of the tree intact.
Crown Reduction
Crown reduction is the removal of a portion of branches at the top of your trees. We generally utilize this type of tree pruning as a last resort as sometimes it can cause the tree to become unhealthy or breed types of rot. We would use this technique if your tree has grown to a point where it is interfering with something above it. A good example would be if your tree is so tall that is touching power lines, you would definitely want to rectify that situation as soon as possible. That way you can avoid any safety hazards that may ensue.
